Thursday, August 30th - Homework and Update

Homework-Math Lesson 3 Homework pp.12-13.  If they are having a hard time with the number bonds, they can skip those parts of the lesson.

Update: Today we got our iPADS!! I'm sure you will have heard about that. We're starting our boot camp lessons and the ipads will stay here at school until October (usually).  We have a charging cart here and students will learn responsible and safe usage here at school.  We'll talk a lot about this at Curriculum Night as well.  We also read more of Winn Dixie and are getting closer to the end!  Ask your child about the story if you're interested. It's a winner!!

Wednesday, August 29th-Homework and Update

HOMEWORK: Finish up on the classroom agreements sheet if you didn't already turn them in.  I'll have extra sheets if you need them tomorrow.

Update:Today we did Multiplication with Arrays! The students did a good job. The trick is getting the order correct: If you have 4x3, the array should be 4 rows of 3. (First number ALWAYS tells the number of groups or rows ,the second tells the number in each row or in each group.) We also finished up our writings on "The Best Part of Me." I can't wait for you to see these on Institute Night.  We practiced Read to Self, Introduced Science with Ada Twist, Scientist, and then had our first Second Step on Growth Mindset. Busy day!!

Tuesday, August 28th-Homework and Daily Update

HOMEWORK: Finish the Classroom Agreements WS that was started in the class.  Those that weren't able to finish in class are asked to finish it at home. You can find a copy of that sheet by clicking here.

Daily Update:
We had another good (but HOT!!) day today.  We started our day with an awesome presentation by Mr. K on Eri's Adventure, a kayak trip his brother is taking on the Columbian River. Mr. K went for a week at the beginning of the journey and it was really neat to hear about his experience.  John Kuntz will be on the river for the duration of the 1,250 miles and you can track his journey online via satellite tracker.  We had the extra bonus of being able to FaceTime with him this afternoon as well and got to "meet" him/talk with him!  What a cool adventure!

We had our first day of math as well and our objective was: Multiplication has equal groups.  We used repeated addition and pictures to help create our multiplication sentences.  The kids did great with their first official math day.

Classroom Agreements

Monday, August 27th!

Hello!  We had our first mini math check in this morning and Tuesday morning will be our first introductory lesson using the materials in Eureka. I'll send home more information in a Parent Home Links letter soon.

We did an interest survey today and also read a really great book called The Best Part of Me. The students are in the process of writing about their best parts and will hopefully be able to show them off to you on Open House night.

I introduced the classroom library to them today (did some book talks of my favorite picture books) and talked about how to find a just right book (5 Finger Rule: If there are 4 or 5 words on a page that you don't know, then it's too hard.) We then found a cool spot to read because it was SO HOT in our room!  We all survived and know it's going to be warm again tomorrow too!
